The RL model is the flagship of the Acura brand.  The 2005- generation  displays classic lines, a comfortable and well-equipped cabin and unmatched reliability.  However, because of its price, the absence of a V8 motor and the lack of distinction in its bodywork (while better than that of the previous generation), many doubted this car could effectively compete with its closest rivals.  Luxury cars competing against the RL are substantive and numerous :  BMW 5  and 7 Series, Audi A6 and A8, Mercedes E- and S-Classes, Cadillac STS, Lexus GS and LS, Infiniti M, Saab 9-5, Jaguar XF and Volvo S80.  The only motor offered is an efficient and reliable V6 but a V8 would have undoubtedly seduced more buyers.  This generation of the RL introduces an all wheel drive system unique to Acura, the SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive).  This system  distributes the torque not only between the front and rear wheels but also between the left and the right ones.  The only transmission offered is an automatic 5 speed one.  A  revamping at the end of the generation for the 2009 model year brought changes to the body and an increase of 10 in horsepower (motor went from 3.5 to 3.7 liters).

The body of the RL exhibits beautiful, classical and understated lines, particularly in the front and the profile.  The rear is slightly more distinctive because of its curves, its metallic accents, superb tail lights and large tailpipes.  The lines will appeal most to customers who seek moderate attention.  The lines of rivals are more pronounced and distinctive than those of the RL 2005-2008.  However, the RL becomes increasingly more notable from one generation to the next.  A revamping of the bodywork takes place for the 2009 model year : large front grille ( of the new Acura style), more distinctive head lights, tail lights and tailpipes and  large metallic strip added to the back. These changes make the RL most noticeable.

The interior is more distinctive than the exterior thanks in large part to its built-in navigation system and its thin and tall central console.  Comfort and quality abound in this car, both in the grade of the materials used such as leather and maple wood and in the flawless craftsmanship.  Lastly, the equipment offered is very comprehensive : ventilated and heated front seats, Xenon headlights, adaptive cruise control, bilingual voice controlled navigation system, 6 CD built-in system, etc.
