The mythical 911 was created in 1963 (originally called 901 and then renamed 911). At that time, the 911 suffered from significant instability because of the poor distribution of its weight : much lighter front because of the rear-mounted engine. Porsche partially alleviates this problem by purposefully adding mass to the front (cast iron weight). Already in those days, we were partial to the flat-6 motor producing 130 horsepower, the decent seats, powerful brakes and precise handling. Thereafter the 911 will continue to be updated even though we feared in the late 70’s that the company would cease production in favor of the 924 and 928. These were innovative cars, with water-cooled rather than air-cooled engines but the 911 devotees screamed in horror. To this day, the 911 sports a flat-6 rear-mounted engine and the engineers have succeeded in making it even more powerful, stable and rewarding to drive. The 911 remains one of the most important icons in the history of sports cars.
